Fred Chu

Associate

Fred focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation and counseling, with experience handling copyright, trademark, trade secret, and false advertising disputes for clients across a range of industries.

Fred has experience managing contentious stages of intellectual property disputes, including addressing cease-and-desist letters, negotiating copyright disputes and settlements, and handling trademark cancellation and opposition proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He also assists clients through discovery and dispositive motion practice and is regularly asked to provide legal research in support of litigation strategy both with and beyond the realm of intellectual property.

In addition to his litigation practice, Fred advises clients on intellectual property transactions, including reviewing and analyzing licensing and royalty agreements, as well as trademark registration matters.

Fred earned his J.D., cum laude, from St. John’s University School of Law, where he served as a senior staff member of the St. John’s Law Review and participated in the Refugee and Immigrant Rights Litigation Clinic. He earned his B.M. from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied classical cello performance. Drawing on his background in music performance, Fred brings a practical understanding of artists' rights, which informs his approach to copyright disputes and counseling.

In addition to his legal work, Fred maintains an active performance calendar and is a section cellist and board member of the Chelsea Symphony. Prior to law school, he worked as a New York City paramedic and is an S130/190 certified wildland firefighter.
